An advanced technique of bypass surgery, LIMA – RIMA -Y on beating heart is available at Alchemist Hospital now. In this technique arterial grafts is used instead of venous grafts.
Addressing a press conference at Chandigarh Press Club on Wednesday, Dr Shashi Jindal, head of cardio thoracic & vascular surgery said that in a conventional technique of bypass surgery we use leg veins to reroute the blood . In this technique , life of these venous conduits is not much and it does match with the life expectancy of young patients thereby requires to re-do bypass after 8 or 10 years.
In this advance technique, arterial grafts is used instead of venous grafts that sustains for 18 to 20 years and thus virtually eliminate the need for 2nd bypass any time in life, said Dr Jindal adding and also there is no need to cut open arms and legs in this technique.
He said further that this is a demanding operation that requires a highest level of surgical skills and training . Only 4% surgeons in USA and 11% in UK and very few in India are trained to perform this procedure routinely.
But this surgery is routinely performed in Alchemist Hospital by the team of skilled doctors without any extra cost, informed Dr Jindal.
Meanwhile Dr. Shailesh Ojha, Senior Consultant & HOD – Cardiac Anaesthesia, Dr Arvind Kaul Senior Consultant and Head Interventional Cardiology, Dr Rohit Parti Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiology were also presented during occasion.
