Canada: IRCC Announces Temporary Cap on Study Visas for International Students

The Voice of Canada News

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has recently announced a temporary cap on the number of international students who will be issued study visas. This cap is expected to lead to a decrease of approximately 35% in study permit applications. To implement this cap, the IRCC will introduce caps for each province and territory that will be weighted by the population of the area. Furthermore, starting from January 22, 2024, every international student applying for a study permit will be required to provide an attestation letter from the province or territory.

The purpose of this cap is to manage the number of international students who come to Canada to pursue their education, ensuring that the country’s resources are effectively utilized. The IRCC will also reassess this cap in 2025 to determine whether any adjustments need to be made to it.
