Gian Paul Recognized as Brampton’s Citizen of the Year Amidst 50th Anniversary Celebrations

On the evening of May 9, at the Rose Theatre Brampton, community leader Gian Paul was bestowed with the prestigious Citizen of the Year Award by Mayor Patrick Brown. This accolade, part of a gala recognizing achievements spanning local to international contributions, coincides with the 50th anniversary of Brampton’s community recognition program.
The celebratory event not only honored Mr. Paul but also recognized other notable achievers including Siraya Franklyn, recipient of the Ken Giles Amateur Athlete Award for her excellence in baton twirling, Sharanjeet Kaur, executive director at Toronto Metropolitan University, for her pivotal role in developing the TMU Brampton School of Medicine, and Grade 11 student Baileigh Nolan, whose artwork now graces Brampton City Hall.
Reflecting on the city’s milestone and the awards, Mayor Brown highlighted, “Our Citizen Awards program celebrates the remarkable efforts and achievements of our community members. As we mark the 50th anniversary of our beloved city, it’s a privilege to honor Gian Paul, whose service has made a profound impact on our community.”
Gian Paul’s commendable roles include his founding directorship at the Indo Canadian Golf Association, which significantly supports health-related charities across Canada, and his presidency at the Mukti Foundation, which provides funeral services for families in financial distress. Mayor Brown praised Mr. Paul’s initiatives, stating, “Gian has vastly improved our community infrastructure, notably with a job bank that effectively connects job seekers with opportunities, thus contributing to a decrease in unemployment rates.”
In addition to his other commitments, Mr. Paul leads the Flower City Friends Club, a community hub that promotes inclusivity and well-being among seniors. Regional Councillor Rowena Santos remarked on his exemplary leadership: “Gian’s unwavering dedication sets a benchmark for community service, laying a solid foundation for sustainable growth and support.” She further added that Gian Paul’s involvement with the Mukti Foundation is just one aspect of his extensive community service, which has earned him recognition as Brampton’s Citizen of the Year. His work with the foundation is a testament to his dedication to enhancing the quality of life for all members of the community, particularly during their most challenging times.
National representatives also commended Mr. Paul’s efforts. MP Shafqat Ali of Brampton Centre called his community service leadership “truly inspiring,” while MPP Amarjot Sandhu of Brampton West and MP Kamal Khera both acknowledged his significant contributions. Regional Councillor Navjit Brar specifically highlighted Mr. Paul’s dedication to enhancing senior citizens’ quality of life.
Upon accepting the award, Mr. Paul expressed his gratitude and future aspirations: “Receiving this award is both a privilege and a humbling experience. These accomplishments, though personal, are a testament to our collective community efforts. My future vision includes creating a multicultural organization to promote deeper understanding of diverse cultures, faiths, and practices in Brampton, aiming to establish it as the top city for living and working. Moreover, I advocate for environmental stewardship among Bramptonians, encouraging tree planting to benefit future generations.”
The City of Brampton and council members, including Gurpartap Singh Toor, Dennis Keenan, and Rod Power, proudly acknowledge Gian Paul’s lasting influence on the community.
