Highway 628 reconstruction means commuter relief

The Voice of Canada News:

This 15-kilometre section of highway between Campsite Road and Edmonton’s west city limits has seen an increasing volume of motorists from Stony Plain, Spruce Grove and Parkland County.

“Safety for all the people who use our roads is my No. 1 priority. As these communities continue to grow, it’s important that our transportation infrastructure keep pace. The Highway 628 project will improve safety and reduce commute times and congestion as people make their way to visit family or friends, go to medical appointments or do their grocery shopping.”

Brian Mason, Minister of Transportation

“Highway 628 is a major artery for our community, connecting us with each other, and with the rest of the greater Edmonton area. We travel it to visit friends and loved one, to business meetings with colleagues, or to our jobs, where we make money to provide for our families. At its surface, Highway 628 is a road, but beyond that, it also connects us together.”

William Choy, mayor Stony Plain

“As a Tri-Municipal Region, we have long been advocating for improvements to this highway. This announcement is very positive news for our communities and will facilitate the safe and efficient movement of people, resources and goods in the region.”

Stuart Houston, mayor Spruce Grove

“We are thrilled and encouraged by the announcement of the highly anticipated reconstruction of Highway 628. This realignment and reconstruction will not only help improve traffic flow along the highway, reducing commute times and congestion, but even more importantly – it will improve safety for all motorists in the region.”

Rod Shaigec, mayor Parkland County
Realignment and reconstruction of the highway will be completed in two stages:

Between 231 Street at the west end of Whitemud Drive in Edmonton to Highway 60.

Between Highway 60 and Campsite Road south of Spruce Grove.

Land purchase and relocation of utilities will begin in 2019 and construction could start in 2021. Construction is expected to take four to six years to complete and will support more than 350 direct and indirect jobs.
