Jagmeet Singh is in Papineau calling out Justin Trudeau’s out-of-touch response to grocery prices

The Voice of Canada :

A day after the Liberals’ out-of-touch announcement on grocery prices, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh went to Justin Trudeau’s riding of Papineau to call him out for failing to bring down grocery prices for families in Quebec and across the country. Singh urged the Liberals to take real action to bring down costs for families by adopting the NDP’s plan to lower sky-high grocery prices.

“After letting Canadian families struggle with the high cost of food for almost two years, the Liberals are trusting ultra-rich CEOs like Galen Weston making record profits off the backs of working families to stabilize prices,” said Singh. “Justin Trudeau is asking Canadians to trust the same companies behind the bread price fixing, this is so insulting. Liberals celebrated price freezing measures that grocery stores do every year before they jack up costs again in the winter — it’s beyond absurd.

“Instead of tackling the corporate greed driving up costs for hardworking people, the Liberals are trying to pull off a public relations stunt to pretend they’re helping. Canadian families deserve so much better. I’m here today to listen to the people in the prime minister’s riding who are struggling with the high costs of food because, clearly, his government is not hearing them.”

As a top priority this fall, Singh introduced the Lowering Prices for Canadians Act to give the Competition Bureau more power to increase competition and lower prices, increase fines for price-fixing and price-gouging, and close loopholes that let big grocery chains price out the competition. The NDP leader is urging the government to adopt his plan instead of relying on the weak reforms in their legislation and to immediately tackle corporate greed driving up costs.

“This government has completely lost touch with what families are going through. And while Pierre Poilievre pretends he’s interested in helping, during his nine years in government food prices increased by 32 per cent. Instead of going after corporate greed, Poilievre gave large grocery chains like Loblaws billions of dollars in tax giveaways,” said Singh. “People have had enough of watching CEOs get richer and richer while they make huge sacrifices to support their families. New Democrats are on your side. We’ll keep fighting to help you can get ahead with meaningful measures to lower prices and get money back in your pocket.”
