The Voice of Canada News
When my parents first immigrated to Canada, home ownership was a big part of their Canadian dream. Our home off of Rutherford Drive was where I created memories with my older sister and younger brother, it’s where my mom rested her feet up after a long day of work, and it’s where I joined my dad to watch the evening news, which sparked my love for politics. Today, home is where I raise my young son and organize with my team to once again represent you as your Liberal Member of Parliament for Brampton North.
I believe everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home. Over the last four years, I raised the issue of housing affordability multiple times in Ottawa and was proud to advocate and champion our Federal Liberal government’s National Housing Strategy.
Through this National Strategy, our Liberal Government is committed to making the dream of home ownership a reality for many more families across Canada.
As I speak with youth that attended my Career and Job Fair, get feedback from my Brampton North Youth Council, and meet young families while I am door knocking, I know they are worried about Brampton’s expensive housing market and how home ownership is becoming more and more challenging.
To address this concern, our Federal Liberal Government introduced the First Time Home Buyers Incentive to provide first time home buyers up to ten percent off the purchase of their first home.
For cities like Brampton, where the average home price is 60% higher than the national average, our Federal Liberal Government, once re-elected, will expand the incentive to include homes valued up to $789,000.
This incentive will help thousands of first-time home buyers lower their monthly mortgage payment without boosting costs on a down payment. This is in addition our Liberal commitment to: launching Canada’s first-ever National Housing Strategy a ten year plan that will help more than 600,000 Canadians find safe and affordable places to live; funding the construction of nearly 140,000 more housing units to be built by 2028; and creating the new Canada Housing Benefit to help 300,000 Canadians with the cost of rent.
Just like it was for my family and my parents before us, homeownership should be an achievable dream, not just a privilege for the richest few. I will continue to work hard with the Liberal Party of Canada to make sure people across Brampton can move forward and have a leg up in buying their first home – and help Canadians lay the groundwork for a better future.
