Focussing on rainwater harvesting system maintenance, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh will launch week long Cleanliness drive of rainwater harvesting systems throughout city from 1st to 7th May, 2025.
While sharing about the initiative, the MC Commissioner Amit Kumar, IAS said that this dedicated week aims to spread awareness and ensure public participation in maintaining cleanliness, with a special focus this year on the cleaning and upkeep of Rainwater Harvesting Systems across the city.
He said that the campaign will be launched under the theme Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidaari under Jal Shakti Abhiyaan ‘Catch the rain’.
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of sustainable water management, stating, “Maintaining rainwater harvesting systems is not just about water conservation, it’s a civic responsibility. With proper cleaning and regular maintenance, these systems can significantly reduce water wastage and support eco-friendly practices.”
He further said that key Steps for Rainwater Harvesting System Maintenance Include:
- Regular inspection of gutters, downspouts, filters, and storage tanks.
- Removal of debris like leaves and twigs to ensure smooth water flow.
- Draining and scrubbing the storage tank interiors with mild detergent.
- Flushing the system and checking for any leaks or blockages.
- Cleaning all filters and screens, and scheduling maintenance every 2-3 months.
The Commissioner urged citizens of city beautiful to take part in this initiative by inspecting and cleaning their own rainwater harvesting systems. The campaign is a part of the broader goal to make Chandigarh a cleaner and greener city.
