Mississauga to Host 2022 Ontario Summer Games

Games will celebrate sport, attract visitors and boost local economy

The City of Mississauga has been chosen as the host community for the 2022 Ontario Summer Games, the province’s largest multi-sport event.

Lisa MacLeod, Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries, was joined by Mississauga MPPs and Bonnie Crombie, Mayor of the City of Mississauga, at the Braeben Golf Course to make the announcement. The Games provide an opportunity for Ontario’s best young athletes to develop their skills and prepare to advance to national and international competitions. They also encourage volunteerism, contribute to local tourism and economic activity, and help communities build their experience and resources to host large-scale events.

“The 2022 Ontario Summer Games exemplifies that our province is open for business, open for jobs and open for athletes,” said Minister MacLeod. “As a diverse, welcoming and energetic city that embodies Ontario as the world in one province, I want to congratulate Mississauga on their successful bid to host athletes from across the province.”

The 2022 Games are expected to attract more than 6,000 visitors to the city and deliver an estimated economic impact of $5 million.

“Mississauga is thrilled to once again be selected to host the Ontario Summer Games,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “As Canada’s sixth-largest city, we pride ourselves on our ability to host large-scale sporting events like these. I want to thank the province for choosing Mississauga. We can’t wait to welcome Ontario’s top athletes, their coaches, families and fans to our great city in 2022.”

QUICK FACTS

The Ontario Summer Games were first delivered in 1973 by the City of Oshawa. Since then, the Games have grown to host 3,500 participants competing in 19 sports. The Mississauga 2022 Ontario Summer Games will be the 27th edition.

Ontario is investing a total of $1 million to support the 2022 Ontario Summer Games.
