MP Sahota celebrates Global Entrepreneurship Week in Brampton

The Voice of Canada News

Brampton, ON – Entrepreneurs are the risk takers, innovators and business owners that drive economic growth and create good middle-class jobs. In Canada, small and medium-sized enterprises run by dedicated, hard-working entrepreneurs make up over 99% of all businesses and employ over 10 million Canadians.

Global Entrepreneurship Week, which took place from November 12 to 18, 2018, is the world’s largest celebration of entrepreneurship. It brings together self-starters, business owners, academics, experts and community leaders to celebrate entrepreneurs, the businesses they run and the impact they make in Canadian communities from coast to coast to coast.

The themes of this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week is connecting ecosystems around the world. The Government of Canada believes that diversity and inclusion are good for our society and our economy, and it offers a wide variety of programs specifically designed to help those traditionally under-represented in our economy succeed.
This was the message Ruby Sahota, Member of Parliament for Brampton North, delivered last week as she welcomed the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business and Export Promotion to celebrate entrepreneurs and business owners, listen to their concerns and share information on Government of Canada programs to help entrepreneurs start businesses, scale up and access new markets.

MP Sahota also visited HRWARE, a local family owned and operated exporting small business in Brampton that delivers innovative technology solutions to simplify day-to-day HR management. The Tuitt family has been able to scale up and expand trade thanks to $60,000 in funding through the Government’s CanExport Program, while taking advantage of the decrease to the small business tax, support through the Trade Commissioners office, and trade agreements like CPTPP, CETA, and USMCA that secures access to 1.5 million consumers.

Quotes
“Global Entrepreneurship Week is an opportunity to celebrate the impact entrepreneurs make in communities across the country. As a small business–friendly government, we’re working hard to reduce red tape and make it easier for Canadian entrepreneurs to start up, scale up and access new markets. When Canadian entrepreneurs succeed, our economy grows and middle-class jobs are created.”

-Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business and Export Promotion

“It takes great courage to start a business. Canadians who take that leap work long hours and face numerous challenges. The Government of Canada is committed to helping entrepreneurs, like the ones in Brampton, succeed. We’re here for all Canadians, making sure that our economic success is inclusive by helping under-represented entrepreneurs, like youth, achieve their business goals.”

Quick facts

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) account for the vast majority of businesses in Canada—99.8%. These 1.1 million SMEs employ 89.6% of the private sector workforce (10.7 million Canadians) and are responsible for 52.5% of Canadian GDP generated by private sector businesses.

Our government is lowering the small business tax rate to 9% in 2019, putting $7,500 back into the pockets of Canadian small business owners annually. This tax rate is the lowest among G7 countries, lower than in France, Germany and even Japan.

To help SMEs find funding, advice and information, the Government launched Innovation Canada, a one-stop shop online destination for business owners.

The Government is helping SMEs expand into new markets abroad—and reach over 1 billion new customers—by promoting export through the negotiation and implementation of free trade agreements such as the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
