New work to improve water‑related services begins in Yamachiche

Yamachiche, Quebec — The governments of Canada and Quebec recognize the importance of investing in water infrastructure to safeguard public health and protect waterways. These investments help communities meet their growing needs, while creating jobs and boosting the regional economy.
Marc H. Plante, Member of the National Assembly for Maskinongé, and Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier for the Regions, and Paul Carbonneau, Mayor of the Municipality of Yamachiche, kicked off the work to extend the sanitary sewer system and replace the drinking water mains in the Chemin de la Rivière-du-Loup area.
They used the occasion to recognize the government’s funding of over 2.9 million dollars for this project under the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund, a program administered by Infrastructure Canada and the Quebec Department of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy.

- The Government of Canada is contributing more than $1.7 million to this project, and the Government of Quebec is providing more than $1.1 million. The Municipality will provide the remaining funding, bringing the total government‑municipal investment to over $3.5 million.
- Thanks to its base financial assistance rate of 83%, the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund is allowing municipalities to invest almost $800 million in infrastructure projects. Over the period from 2016 to 2018, the federal government will provide $363.8 million and the Government of Quebec will provide $300 million, for a total joint investment of $664 million.
- The Government of Canada will invest more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada’s rural and northern communities.
- Of this funding, $26.9 billion will support green infrastructure projects, including $5 billion that will be available for investment through the Canada Infrastructure Bank.
The 2018-2028 Quebec Infrastructure Plan calls for nearly $7.3 billion in investments in municipal infrastructure under the Quebec Department of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy (MAMOT). When combined with contributions from the Government of Canada and municipalities, this means more than $14.3 billion will be invested in municipal infrastructure in Quebec during this period.
