Peel Police Service Board Supports Federal Border Security Efforts, Calls for Stronger Action on Illegal Firearms Trafficking

The Voice of Canada News :

The Peel Police Service Board urged the federal government to expand its border security efforts beyond illicit drugs to include stronger measures targeting the flow of illegal firearms into Canada. In a letter sent today to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister of Public Safety David McGuinty, and Minister of Justice Arif Virani, the Board expressed its strong support for enhanced federal border resources while also highlighting the urgent need to disrupt firearms smuggling.

With Peel Region serving as a critical gateway for international trade and travel, the Board reinforced its commitment to working with all levels of government to strengthen public safety. The letter also outlined an opportunity to partner with the federal government and the Canadian Armed Forces by offering operational support as part of Peel Regional Police’s ongoing efforts to enhance policing capabilities, including the acquisition of a new hangar facility.

“The safety of our communities depends on a comprehensive approach to border security,” said Nando Iannicca, Chair of the Peel Police Service Board. “While we strongly support the federal government’s recent steps to curb illicit drug trafficking, we must ensure that firearms smuggling receives the same level of attention. The majority of gun crimes in Canada involve illegal firearms smuggled across the border, and we cannot afford to overlook this issue. Peel is ready to support and partner with the federal government in any way necessary to strengthen these efforts.”

Peel Regional Police has already demonstrated success in tackling transnational crime. A recent collaboration with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies resulted in a significant investigation that dismantled a major international drug and firearms trafficking network. Chief Nishan Duraiappah emphasized the need for continued cooperation at all levels to maintain momentum in disrupting organized crime.

“Policing today requires a coordinated, intelligence-led approach to combat organized crime and the trafficking of both drugs and firearms,” said Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah. “We welcome the federal government’s leadership in enhancing border security and stand ready to work alongside them, the Canadian Armed Forces, and our law enforcement partners on both sides of the border to build on the progress already made in Peel and beyond.”

The Peel Police Service Board remains committed to supporting initiatives that enhance public safety and will continue to advocate for resources that address the evolving challenges faced by law enforcement. The Board and Peel Regional Police looks forward to further discussions with federal officials on expanding border security measures to tackle both illicit drugs and illegal firearms.
