Peel Regional Police – Road Safety Services Back to School Safety Campaign- Zero Tolerance

The Voice of Canada News:

Region of Peel – With the first day of school just around the corner, Peel Regional Police would like to reiterate to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians the importance of working together to ensure our roads remain safe.

After an extended time away from riding on school buses, children will again be out on neighbouring streets as they commute to and from school on school buses. When a school bus has stopped and activated its flashing red lights, all vehicles travelling behind or approaching the bus must come to a complete stop before reaching the bus. Drivers who fail to stop when the flashing red lights are activated and the stop sign deployed face a fine between $400.00 and $2,000 and receive six demerit points for their first offence. If you are convicted a second time within five years, the penalty is a fine of $1,000 to $4,000 and six demerit points. Learn more about where to stop for a school bus.

As students get back into the habit of getting on and off their school bus safely, parents are encouraged to review and practice safety rules with their children, ensuring they are familiar with their bus route, safety on and off the bus and pedestrian safety tips. Access our website for pedestrian and road safety tips and resources.

Along with students this September, road users can expect an increased police presence within designated school and community safety zones. Our officers are working hard to ensure that the rules of the road, as set out in the Highway Traffic Act, are followed to keep kids safe. Those breaking the road rules can expect a zero-tolerance approach and will be issued tickets accordingly.

We urge motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to commute safely, responsibly, and free from distractions and be extra vigilant when travelling through residential areas, school zones, and bus routes. The start of the school year is also a great time to take or renew your pledge to keep roadways in Peel safer.
