Vandana Vishwas to Perform at Trinidad for Divali Nagar
The Voice of Canada News:
Mississauga based World Music artist Vandana Vishwas, who specializes in South Asian music, has been invited to perform at two final evenings of Trinidad’s Divali Nagar festival this year. This is the first time a Canadian artist of non-Trinidad & Tobago origin has been invited to perform at Divali Nagar.
Trinidad & Tobago comprises more than 37% persons of Indian origin, who are descendants of indentured workers from South Asia, or the then British Raj, brought to replace emancipated Africans who refused to continue working under the violent, exploitative conditions on the sugar plantations. Through cultural preservation groups, Trinidadians of Indian descent maintain many of their customs, traditions, and language, and celebration of traditional Hindu festivals such as Holi and Diwali is an essential part of Trinidadian culture. It is in this context that Divali Nagar, organized every year by NCIC (National Council of Indian Culture), plays an important part in preserving the historic traditions which have lost prevalence in India itself.
Vandana Vishwas is no stranger to South Asians all over North America, having won Awards such as US Independent Music Award, Global Music Award and many more including Mississauga’s own Marty Award for established music. Her original music albums have garnered rave critical reviews, and have topped international charts. Vandana is best known for her flawless silk smooth vocals and now the Trinidadians will be treated to her voice as well. Divali Nagar takes place from 18 to 26 October 2019 and Vandana is slated to perform on the evenings of 25th and 26th October 2019.
