
Chandigarh Celebrates World Environment Day 2025 with a Strong Message Against Plastic Pollution

Chandigarh – In a powerful display of community-driven environmental stewardship, the Department of Environment, in collaboration with the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee, Forest Department, and NGOs conducted an extensive series of events to commemorate World Environment Day 2025.

Recognizing the pressing need to combat plastic pollution, the celebrations unfolded over two weeks, starting on May 22, 2025, encompassing diverse and impactful initiatives aimed at fostering awareness and collective action.
With unwavering enthusiasm and participation across the city, Chandigarh saw Awareness campaigns educating citizens on the hazards of plastic pollution and sustainable alternatives. Quiz competitions at educational institutions fostering environmental consciousness among youth. Mass cleaning drives at Sukhna Choe and Patiala Ki Rao Choe, restoring these water bodies and reinforcing the message of ecological responsibility. Nukkad Nataks (street plays) creatively conveying the dire consequences of unchecked plastic use. Ceremonial programs at schools and colleges, inspiring students to become environmental ambassadors.
The grand culmination program unfolded at Elante Mall, transforming the bustling commercial hub into a beacon of sustainable advocacy. In an effort to discourage the use of plastic bags, the Department of Environment distributed free cloth bags, urging citizens to adopt eco-friendly alternatives.

Gracing the occasion was Saurabh Kumar, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests & Director, Environment Department, as the Chief Guest, accompanied by Anup Soni, Conservator of Forests & Additional Director, Environment Department. Their presence underscored the importance of leadership and governance in driving large-scale environmental change.
During his address, Saurabh Kumar stressed the urgent need to phase out single-use plastics, urging residents, businesses, and institutions to integrate sustainable practices into everyday life. “The challenge of plastic pollution is one that demands relentless effort and unified action. Chandigarh must continue leading by example, ensuring that our future generations inherit a cleaner, greener planet,” he emphasized.

The Department of Environment expresses heartfelt gratitude to all individuals, volunteers, and organizations that contributed to this multi-faceted campaign. Their dedication has reaffirmed Chandigarh’s commitment to a plastic-free, environmentally conscious future.
