Doug Ford, the former city councilor and older brother of late former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, has officially been named the new leader of the Ontario PC party. Ford was named leader after a seven and a half-hour delay, as Ford and Elliott were entangled in a neck to neck race, and the party struggled to determine a winner. Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford spoke to the media after winning leadership of the party.
“We have a lot to do in a short amount of time,” Ford said in his acceptance speech. “Together we will return our province to where it belongs.” “To the people of Ontario, I say relief is on the way,” he said. “To Kathleen Wynne, I say your days are numbered as premier.” He promised that he will put a platform forward that speaks to every Ontarian.”
He also vowed to boost healthcare spending and end “hallway healthcare” in the province’s hospitals.
He thanked all three of his competitors in the race, along with his family, the PC members who participated in the vote.
More than thousand party members were present at the Markham Hilton Hotel and Convention Centre to hear the results.
Ford will move immediately into campaigning for the general election scheduled for June 7.
