The Voice of Canada News | Chelsea won the semi-finals against Southampton by maintaining a good score of 2-0 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. The winning team will now play against Manchester United in the FA Cup finals. Goals were scored by Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata. Giroud scored the first goal within the first 30 seconds of the second half after a captivating dribble inside Southampton’s penalty area.
The Frenchman effortlessly chose his way past the opposing defenders and left himself just a tap-in from the close range.
Morata, later got the second goal with an 82nd– minute header from Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross when he was brought in to replace Giroud in the second half.
According to Chelsea’s coach Antonio Conte, the match was started with Giroud instead of Morata mainly because of his physical nature and later added that Morata’s impact was quite “impressive” when he set his foot on the field.
Although Chelsea had most of the possession during the first half, it was facing difficulty in scoring.
Southampton adopted a more open approach and they went quite close to equalizing in the 72nd minute when Nathan Redmond’s strike was pushed away by goalkeeper Willy Caballero. Southampton’s manager Mark Hughes also stated that it was “poor goalkeeping” on Caballero’s part.
The game was ended by Morata’s header, though Austin came close to scoring at the 84th minute when his shot hit the post.
Chelsea hasn’t won the FA Cup since 2012 when it beat Liverpool, whereas Manchester United last won the competition two years ago against Crystal Palace.
The Final will take place on 19th May at the Wembley, which will see Conte face off against former Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho.
