Message from the Minister of Health – World Blood Donor Day
The Voice of Canada News
As we mark World Blood Donor Day, I would ask Canadians to consider this year’s theme: “Be there for someone else. Give blood. Share life.”
Almost half of the Canadian citizens are eligible to participate in donating blood, yet only a small percentage of individuals donate blood each year.
A single blood donation takes about an hour and has the potential to save the lives of up to three Canadians in need. These could be our colleagues, friends, or even members of our families.
Canada’s blood system is recognized internationally as one of the safest in the world. Health Canada works with the provinces, territories, Héma-Québec, Canadian Blood Services, health professionals, and other partners to support a safe, effective and responsive blood system for Canadians.
There are a variety of ways to plan your blood donations, such as participating in a blood drive, making a traditional appointment booking, or using the GiveBlood Mobile App.
In honour of World Blood Donor Day, I strongly encourage all Canadians to learn more about blood donation and about how to become donors.
