The Voice of Canada News | After an indigenous spiritual leader was recently shot to death, it was reported that it had resulted in the death of a Canadian citizen, as an act of retaliation against the murder.
According to reports, an 81-year-old woman, named Olivia Arevalo Lomas from an ethnic group called Shipibo-Conibo, was killed at home in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest on Thursday.
Arevalo Lomas was an indigenous rights activist, a traditional healer, and a community leader.
According to the Peruvian El Comercio newspaper, the body of the Canadian was found on Saturday by Ucayali police. The paper said that a mob hanged the man, buried his body partially in a rural hamlet just about 20-minute drive from the community, where Arevalo was shot dead on 19th April. Many media reports and the Peruvian police reported that the Canadian lived in the regional capital of Pucallpa, called Ucayali. According to sources the police and Peru’s Attorney General are investigating his death. The Office of Public Defender of Peru condemned the murder of Arevalo Lomas and her family and possible witnesses are being interviewed as well. It also stated that the lives of Indigenous people are at risk due to the increase in illegal activities
