The Peel Police Service Board unveiled Police Governance and Human Rights: Insights and Recommendations from Community Consultations, a report that outlines findings from extensive consultations with community members, human rights organizations, and subject-matter experts. The report presents the Peel Police Service Board with a transformative course toward embedding human rights principles into policing and governance across Peel Region.
Drawing from the perspectives of advocacy groups, social service organizations, faith-based communities, and residents, this initiative was spearheaded by the Board’s Governance and Human Rights Committee. It reflects the Board’s unwavering commitment to fostering equitable, transparent, and accountable policing practices that meet the needs of Peel’s diverse communities.
“This report is a significant step in reimagining police governance through the lens of human rights,” said Sumeeta Kohli, Vice-Chair of the Peel Police Service Board and Chair of the Governance and Human Rights Committee. “The insights shared by community members provide a roadmap for balancing accountability with understanding and creating policies that reflect the diversity and lived experiences of the communities we serve.”
Key themes emerging from the consultations include:
