Peel Regional Police – Peel Police Services Board Extends Chief Nishan Duraiappah’s Contract to 2028

Region of Peel – The Peel Police Services Board today announced the extension of Chief Nishan Duraiappah’s contract to 2028. Chief Duraiappah, who assumed the role on October 1, 2019, has been instrumental in advancing the vision and mission of the Police Services Board and Peel Regional Police and has demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout his tenure.

Under Chief Duraiappah’s leadership, the Peel Regional Police has achieved several key accomplishments, showcasing his commitment to community safety and well-being, building deep relationships between the police service and the residents of Peel Region. Chief Duraiappah also served as President of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police from 2022-2023, playing a pivotal role advancing policing initiatives across the province.

Police Services Board Chair Nando Iannicca expressed the Board’s unwavering confidence in Chief Duraiappah’s ability to lead Peel Regional Police into the future. “Chief Duraiappah has proven himself to be an outstanding leader with a deep commitment to community safety and well-being. The decision to extend his contract reflects the Police Services Board’s confidence in his vision, dedication, and the positive impact he has had on our community.”

Chief Duraiappah also shared his thoughts on the contract extension, stating, “I am honoured and grateful for the opportunity to continue to work with the outstanding women and men of Peel Regional Police and this great Region as Chief of Police. Together with these dedicated members of Peel Regional Police, we will build on our successes and work towards creating the most progressive, innovative and inclusive police service in Canada.”
