Poilievre Slams Trudeau’s Inaction as US Tariffs Loom: Urges Immediate Parliamentary Action
The Voice of Canada News – Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is sounding the alarm over the potential impact of looming 25% tariffs from the United States, set to take effect on February 1st. In a statement released, Poilievre criticized the Liberal government for its failure to take decisive action in the face of this escalating trade crisis, accusing them of prioritizing internal power struggles over the welfare of Canadians.
“Canada is facing a critical challenge,” Poilievre began, pointing out that these tariffs—if imposed—would have severe and far-reaching consequences for Canada’s economy. The tariffs, aimed at combating the illegal flow of drugs and criminal activity at the border, come amid rising tensions with Canada’s largest trading partner.
Poilievre noted that while the Liberals have acknowledged weaknesses in border security, their response has been inadequate. “The government announced a multi-billion-dollar border plan but failed to secure the necessary funding after shutting down Parliament,” Poilievre said. “This failure to act leaves Canada vulnerable at a time when swift, decisive action is required.”
The Conservative leader also emphasized the need for retaliatory tariffs to protect Canadian interests, calling for immediate Parliamentary consideration. However, he lamented that Parliament remains shut down, exacerbating the crisis. “Canada has never been weaker, and things have never been so out of control,” Poilievre said, blasting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and key figures like Chrystia Freeland and Mark Carney for their political infighting. “Instead of focusing on the country’s needs, they are fighting for power.”
Poilievre called on Trudeau to reopen Parliament immediately to pass new border control measures, approve trade retaliation, and put together a comprehensive economic recovery plan. “The Prime Minister has the power to cut short prorogation and get Parliament back to work,” Poilievre stated. “It’s time to put Canada first.”
With the threat of tariffs casting a shadow over Canada’s economy, the Conservative leader is urging a swift and unified response from Parliament to protect Canadian jobs and industries.
