Premier Doug Ford Congratulates New Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada

The Voice of Canada : Premier Doug Ford issued the following statement to mark the election of a new federal Liberal Party leader and presumptive prime minister:

“I want to extend my congratulations to Mark Carney on being elected as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and our next prime minister. Your election comes at a critical time as our country continues to stare down the ongoing threat of President Trump’s tariffs. Now more than ever, Canada needs strong leadership and cooperation across all levels of government to protect our country.

As Premier of Ontario, I look forward to renewed federal leadership when it comes to supporting projects that will unleash the economic potential of Canada’s economy, including and especially by unlocking critical minerals across Ontario’s north and in the Ring of Fire. The federal government needs to get out of the way and get behind these nation-building projects, so we can build a more prosperous and secure future for Canada.

Given the commitments made in the recent leadership campaign, I look forward to the swift removal of the federal carbon tax at the earliest opportunity. This expensive, job-killing tax has made life more expensive for Ontario families and has made our country less competitive and less able to attract investment.

I also want to extend my sincere thanks to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his years of service to our country. We did not always agree, but we put country before party or ideology to help move Canada forward, including attracting $46 billion worth of new investments in Ontario’s automotive, electric vehicle and EV battery sectors. My firm expectation, and the expectation of thousands of Ontario autoworkers, is that any future prime minister and government continue to honour the federal commitments that helped secure these historic investments.

Our country faces significant challenges, but we also are blessed to live in a country of enormous potential and opportunity. Ontario stands ready to help unlock this potential in partnership with the federal government and the other provinces and territories.

Together, we will build the true north, strong and free.”
