Brampton Boat Race Sets Professors Lake Ablaze with Colour, Culture and Community Spirit

Professors Lake came alive with colour, culture and excitement as the 16th Canadian Nehru Trophy Brampton Boat Race brought together thousands of people in one of Brampton’s most spectacular multicultural community celebrations.
Led by Brampton Malayalee Samajam President and Chief Organizer Kurian Prakkanam, the event once again demonstrated how a traditional Kerala cultural celebration can transcend community boundaries and become a major Canadian multicultural festival.
The spectacular event attracted political leaders, elected representatives, community leaders, cultural organizations, athletes, volunteers and families from diverse backgrounds, who came together to celebrate Kerala’s legendary Vallam Kali tradition on Canadian soil.
The presence and participation of prominent political and community leaders reflected the growing importance of the Brampton Boat Race as a signature multicultural celebration in the Canadian community. Leaders praised the event for its ability to bring people together, promote cultural understanding and showcase the richness of Canada’s diverse communities.
Under the leadership of Kurian Prakkanam, the Brampton Boat Race has grown into much more than a sporting competition. It has become a powerful platform for community unity, cultural preservation, volunteerism and multicultural engagement, connecting generations of Malayalees while welcoming Canadians from diverse cultural backgrounds.
The spectacular sight of traditional Chundan Vallams racing across Professors Lake, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of Vanchipattu, cultural performances and enthusiastic crowds, transformed Brampton into a celebration of Kerala heritage and Canadian multiculturalism.
The event’s success also highlighted Kurian Prakkanam’s ability to bring together community organizations, volunteers, sponsors, cultural groups and political leaders around a common vision.
What began as a celebration of Kerala’s traditional boat-racing heritage has evolved into an event that represents something much larger — a celebration of Canada itself, where different cultures come together, share their traditions and build stronger communities.
The Brampton Boat Race is increasingly being recognized as one of the most distinctive cultural sporting events in the Canadian Malayalee community, with Kurian Prakkanam’s leadership playing a central role in its growth, visibility and national profile.
From the backwaters of Kerala to the shores of Professors Lake, the Canadian Nehru Trophy continues to prove that culture can cross borders, communities can unite through celebration, and tradition can become a powerful bridge between generations and cultures.
Thousands Join Colourful Community Parade
The festivities began with a spectacular community parade, which brought together thousands of participants representing various cultural organizations and communities.
The parade showcased the artistic and cultural traditions of different groups and added a vibrant festival atmosphere to the city of Brampton.
Brampton Malayalee Samajam Vice President Arun Sivakumar, Jomal Sebastian and Shibu Koodal led the parade.
A particularly memorable moment came when Kurian Prakkanam, the chief organizer and driving force behind the Brampton Boat Race, entered the main venue carrying the official boat-race flag presented by prominent businessman M. A. Yusuff Ali.
Canadian and Indian National Flags Raised
The official inauguration ceremony was conducted with great ceremony and national pride.
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown officially inaugurated the boat race. MP Sonia Sidhu raised the Canadian national flag, while Consul General of India in Toronto Mahaveer Singhvi raised the Indian national flag as part of the celebrations marking India’s Independence Day.
The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Kurian Prakkanam, President of Brampton Malayalee Samajam.
The distinguished gathering included Ruby Sahota, Minister of State in the Government of Canada; Prabmeet Sarkaria, Ontario Minister; Sonia Sidhu, MP; Amarjit Gill, MP; Ontario Minister Charmaine Williams; Amarjot Sandhu, MPP; Hardeep Grewal, MPP; several Brampton City Councillors; Police Superintendent Judy Dhosan; and numerous community, cultural and organizational leaders.
The inaugural proceedings were coordinated by Brampton Malayalee Samajam General Secretary Yogesh Gopakumar.
Champakulam Chundan Captures Canadian Nehru Trophy
The highlight of the day was, undoubtedly, the highly competitive boat race, which delivered the speed, precision and excitement that Vallam Kali is renowned for.
After a thrilling contest, Kuttanad Town Boat Club – Champakulam Chundan emerged victorious, lifting the coveted Canadian Nehru Trophy.

The Race Coordination Committee was led by Binu Joshua, Jithin Puthenveettil and Leju Ramachandran. Jithin Puthenveettil announced the official results.
Kurian Prakkanam, President of Brampton Malayalee Samajam, presented the championship trophy to the winning team.
The cash prizes were distributed by Shibu Cherian, Treasurer of Brampton Malayalee Samajam, together with Gold Sponsor Arun Sivaram.
A Grand Celebration of community Unity in Canada
The Canadian Nehru Trophy is organized by the Brampton Malayalee Samajam, one of Canada’s prominent Malayalee community organizations, under the leadership of Kurian Prakkanam, who also serves as President of the National Federation of Malayalee Associations in Canada (NFMA Canada), an umbrella organization representing more than 50 Malayalee associations across the country.
The success of the event was the result of the collective efforts of hundreds of volunteers, community leaders, organizational representatives, sponsors and supporters who worked together under the leadership of President Kurian Prakkanam.
A dedicated team played key roles in successfully delivering the event. Among them were Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair Shibu Cherian; Vice President and Gold Sponsor Arun Sivaram; Vice President Binu Joshua; General Secretaries Yogesh Gopakumar and Leju Ramachandran; Organizing Secretaries Jomal Sebastian and Thomas John Konni; Jeffin Vayalil Joseph; Publicity team members Shibu Koodal, Gopakumar Nair and Nisha Babu, along with Anna Sharath, Jerin Jacob, Akhil V.
